In the older literature this species has been placed in the genus Notozus, where it was known as scutellaris or constrictus. Identification keys and general biology are given in Morgan (1984) and Kunz (1994).
Devon to Kent and north to Westmorland and North Yorkshire.
Overseas, found in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Poland, Hungary, north Africa and Palaearctic Asia, except Arabia and Japan.
This species is not regarded as being scarce or threatened.
Occurs in the habitats of its hosts which are open sandy areas. May be abundant around the nesting sites of its host.
June to August but usually found during July.
Wild carrot has been recorded and it regularly visits Ericaceae.
