Throughout England, Wales and Scotland with a few records from Ireland (including Dunkerron, Kerry; Landenstown, Kildare; Royal Canal, Kildare; Anthdown, Wicklow; Woodend, Wicklow; Tollymore Park, Down: records from O W Richards and M Olmi).
Overseas it occurs in Austria, Bulgaria, the former Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Korea, Mongolia, Norway, Romania, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and Yugoslavia.

Found in a wide range of habitats including bog, calcareous grassland, fen, lowland heathland, dry acid grassland, coastal vegetated shingle, coastal sand dunes, saltmarsh and sandy woodland.
Mainly found during July, also June and August, rarely May and September.
