Unlike Bees and Wasps, which each inlude a number of different families, the Ant species all belong to the same single family - the Formicidae. This is split into a number of subfamilies only four of which are represented in Britain and Ireland. They are Dolichoderinae, Formicinae, Myrmicinae and Ponerinae.
