Identification aids
Below: On the left is a queen of B. ruderatus (pale form) and on the upper right is a queen B. hortorum, with a queen B. jonellus at lower right.

B ruderatus
queens are often considerably larger than B hortorum queens. Note also the more neatly "trimmed" look of the B. ruderatus - the B. hortorum and B jonellus are scruffier looking. Also, B. ruderatus often looks darker than B. hortorum/jonellus.

B. jonellus
looks somewhat like a small, fluffy B. hortorum with a short face. Photos: Steve Falk
