Beginners Aculeates: Andrena fulva - Tawny Mining Bee
Recognition: A brightly coloured fox-red haired bee (females only). Often seen on the ground where it excavates nests in loose soil. Frequently encountered in the short turf of lawns. Flies April - early June. Peak occurrence April - early May.

Similar species - Osmia rufa is a lighter orange colour and does not nest in the ground. Andrena fulva has longer, more deeply coloured hairs on the thorax than Osmia rufa.
Photos: Above, female excavating nest in loose soil. Below female at rest.
